Organic Clothing

Organic Clothing. This term is comprised of two words: organic and clothing. Organic refers to anything that is natural, healthy, free from chemicals, environment-friendly, and unaltered by harmful chemical processes. Clothing is the covering and garment humans wear primarily to protect themselves. Hence, organic clothing is a type of clothing made up of natural, healthy, chemical-free and environment-friendly materials. Organic clothing is the result of the farmers' campaign to promote their organic products and to save the environment.

Organic clothing is usually from fibers of plants or trees like hemp, bamboo, banana, soy, kapok and pineapple. But that does not necessarily mean that all fibers from plants and trees use materials for clothing are already organic. To be considered organic clothing, the plants and trees used should be raised and grown in natural ways without the aid of chemical pesticides, insecticides and artificial fertilizers. Materials for organic clothing can also come from animals like sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats, provided that these animals were also raised using organic means.

Although, organic clothing is usually produced through manual weaving for better style, texture and design, there are already guidelines set so that even those machine-woven fabrics can qualify as organic. International groups and associations have developed these guidelines to standardize organic clothing. However, regulations vary depending on the association or group accrediting the company that is selling organic clothing. However, for most cases, organic clothing has labels stating how much of it is green.

Why Organic Clothing

With the increasing environmental concern, campaigns supporting organic clothing have also surfaced and become active. More and more people are getting concerned on how they can save the environment from further destruction; hence, the awareness about organic products including clothes made of environment-friendly fabrics has also become widespread.

Organic clothing helps the environment in several ways. Fewer toxins will go into the soil, air and water. This is due to zero application of pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers in growing and raising plants and animals. The quantity of waste products from garment factories would also be trimmed down because factories will be induced to using organic in producing the same kind of clothing and fiber.

Since organic clothing involves raising and growing the source through organic means, it also promotes health not only to plants and animals, but on humans as well since they are the ones who will be wearing the garment. Clothing made of organic fabrics is proven to be more comfortable and does not trigger allergies and rashes, too.
